Telus Skins Game Set
for Collingwood, Ontario
June 2007
February 27, 2007 -- The 2007 Telus
Skins Game will return to Ontario for
the first time since 2003, at the new
Raven Golf Club at Lora Bay, located
fifteen minutes from Collingwood,
Ontario and the Village at Blue
Mountain, June 17-19.
“Ontario’s outdoor recreation capital
will serve as the host of this year’s
TELUS Skins Game, and we are proud to
be associated with this elite event,”
said Steve Podborski, director of
TELUS Sport Marketing. “We are excited
about bringing some of the biggest
names in golf to Ontario to help
celebrate the Telus Skins Game with
Canadian golf fans.”
“We are delighted to be selected as
this year’s TELUS Skins Game charity
designate,” said Josée Goulet. “It is
through the generous support of
organizations like Telus that the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
can continue is important research in
a search for a cure for Type 1
diabetes.”
The Raven at Lora Bay’s 7,200 yard
championship layout, co-designed by
PGA Tour Professional Tom Lehman and
Canadian golf course architect Thomas
McBroom, was recently named to Travel
& Leisure Magazine’s list of the Best
New Golf Courses in 2006.
The Telus Skins Game participants, as
well as event ticket information, will
be announced in the coming months
This year’s TELUS Skins Game will
take place at the Thomas McBroom/Tom
Lehman-designed Raven Golf Club at
Lora Bay near Collingwood, Ont.,
June 17-19.
While last year’s Skins Game featured
players from five different age groups
– Sergio Garcia, John Daly, Stephen
Ames, Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus –
this year’s competitors, though not
yet announced, will form a global
theme, with each representing a
different country. Canadian Ames,
Spain’s Garcia and South African
Retief Goosen are names that have been
mentioned.
The Raven at Lora Bay received rave
reviews after opening last year. Built
on a wonderful piece of property
offering stunning views of Georgian
Bay, Lora Bay’s most distinctive
features are its high-faced bunkers
fronted or backed by high fescue,
giving the course a traditional look.
“The vision was to create very gnarly,
wind-swept bunkers,” McBroom said
after the course’s opening. “But we
wanted them to feel very old and that
they weren’t artificial, that they
were created the old-fashioned way
with horses and pull scrapers the way
they used to do it back in the 1920s.
Daly won the event last year for the
first time in seven appearances,
collecting nine skins at Banff Springs
GC for $210,000. Other past winners
include Ames (2005), Phil Mickelson
(2004), Vijay Singh (2003, ‘01),
Garcia (2002), Fred Couples (2000,
1998, ’96, ’94, ’93), Mike Weir
(1999), Greg Norman (1997) and Nick
Faldo (1995).
This year’s Skins Game charity partner
will be the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation (JDRF), a worldwide leader
in Type 1 diabetes research.
